What is a Council on Aging?

A Council on Aging (COA) is a 501(c)3 organization that provides services to senior citizens by utilizing state and federal tax dollars through the Older Americans Act. In the State of Michigan these dollars are distributed to COAs through the Area Agency on Aging (AAA).

Join us at the Petoskey Center on Thursday, February 9 at 11:30 a.m. for delectable dinner served by students from Harbor Light Christian School, a special musical program presented by the FCEC chorus, and a delightfully cheery winter atmosphere! Tickets are required to attend, so please call 347-3211 to make a reservation.

  • A presentation on hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, will be offered at the Petoskey Center on Thursday, February 16 at 12:30. Rhonda Fink, RN, BSN, from the Cardiovascular Rehab Center at NMRH will speak on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of this "silent killer."
  • Personal Action Toward Health (PATH) begins on February 22 at the Demmer Wellness Pavilion in Petoskey. This free program gives persons living with a chronic disease an opportunity to find creative ways to live happily and healthfully with their condition. History of the Friendship Centers

Humble Beginnings 

In the early 1960's, a small group of elderly friends in Petoskey decided that it would be fun to get together for some socialization on a regular basis. They met in the basement of a neighborhood church and over the years the group added more participants. By the late 1960's, the group had grown in size and needed a more permanent home. During this time, a group of women from St. Francis Church conceived of a drop-in center for senior adults. Their group, called “Services to Older Adults,” set up a visiting committee to minister to the needs of homebound and geriatric center patients. They were soon joined in their efforts by members of Church Women United.
